ESG Reporting. Can you prove the numbers?

It’s no longer enough to report the stats.

Companies need to stand behind them.

For many organisations, ESG reporting begins long before the report itself.

The data is scattered across utility accounts, fleet records, spreadsheets, procurement systems, meters, operational teams and external sources. Some information is measured. Some are supplied by third parties. Some may need to be formally attested because no direct measurement exists.

The challenge is being able to explain, defend and reproduce the number once it appears in an ESG disclosure.

For JSE-listed companies, this distinction matters. VantageAssay has been designed around the IFRS S2 and JSE Sustainability and Climate Disclosure Guidance frameworks, with the same underlying inventory also supporting GRI, CDP and ESRS reporting.

A polished ESG report can hide a complicated data problem.

What happens when someone asks:

•   Where did this figure come from?
•   Was it measured directly?
•   Was it taken from an existing system?
•   Was it calculated using an external factor?
•   Was it provided by an individual?
•   What happened when data was missing?
•   Which methodology was used?
•   Could the same figure be reproduced six months later?

These aren’t merely technical questions. They go to the credibility of the disclosure itself.

Traditional approaches can create another problem: the temptation to fill data gaps with assumptions that aren’t clearly visible to the person reading the final report.

VantageAssay takes a different approach.

What isn’t measured isn’t quietly estimated. It’s declared.

The platform assigns every quantity a provenance classification: Measured, Attested or Referenced, and records the method used to derive it. Missing data is identified rather than concealed, while corrections are appended rather than silently overwriting historical information.

That creates something increasingly valuable: a defensible chain between the source data and the final disclosure.

VantageAssay is an environmental reporting engine built to turn the data an organisation already has, into a traceable, reproducible environmental inventory and disclosure.

It doesn’t require every meter to be replaced. It doesn’t require Advannotech to have installed the existing infrastructure. Data can come from existing meters, utility accounts, operational records, procurement and financial data, or formally attested information.

From there, VantageAssay normalises the information, resolves organisational and operational boundaries, applies a versioned factor library, records attestations and generates disclosure outputs from a frozen snapshot.

The result is a traceable reporting system.

At first release, VantageAssay supports IFRS S2 and the JSE Sustainability and Climate Disclosure Guidance, with GRI, CDP and ESRS built on the same underlying inventory. It also produces completeness information and an evidence pack that allows an assurance provider to trace reported figures back to their source.

For organisations preparing for greater scrutiny of sustainability information, that changes the question.

It’s no longer simply:

“Do we have the data?”

It’s:

“Can we stand behind every number we report?”

And that is where ESG reporting starts becoming something more valuable than a compliance exercise: a transparent, reproducible and evidence-based view of the organisation’s environmental performance.
