10 Questions Q&A: Building More Than Technology: A Conversation with Xolani Zuma

CEO & Founder | Advannotech

From entrepreneur to industry leader: Xolani Zuma reflects on building Advannotech and shaping the future of connected technology.

Every successful technology company begins with an idea. But the businesses that truly leave a lasting impact are built on something much bigger than products or platforms. They’re built on purpose.

For Xolani Zuma, Founder and CEO of Advannotech, technology has never been about technology alone. It has always been about solving real-world challenges, connecting people with better information, and helping organisations make smarter decisions through innovation.

Since founding Advannotech in 2018, Xolani has transformed a bold vision into one of South Africa’s fastest-growing integrated technology companies. What started with a mission to bridge the gap between traditional facilities management and emerging digital technologies has evolved into a business delivering intelligent solutions across utilities, smart infrastructure, security, healthcare, artificial intelligence, and IoT. Today, that vision extends even further into consumers’ homes through AdvannoSmart and SmartKWAM, and into strategic national partnerships with organisations such as Telkom Business.

Yet behind every milestone lies a deeper story—one of resilience, entrepreneurship, calculated risk-taking, and an unwavering belief in the power of African innovation.

In this edition of our 10 Questions Q&A series, we sit down with Xolani to discuss the journey behind Advannotech, the evolution of South Africa’s technology landscape, the opportunities for black-owned technology businesses, and why the future belongs to organisations that embrace connected, intelligent ecosystems.

His insights offer more than a glimpse into the future of technology. They provide a compelling perspective on leadership, innovation, and what it takes to build a business designed not only for growth, but for lasting impact.

1. Every entrepreneur has a story. Long before founding Advannotech, what did you want to be when you grew up, and how did that journey ultimately lead you into technology?

A: With a professional background exceeding two decades in facilities management including executive leadership as VP of Facilities for Corporate Real Estate at Absa and Managing Director for Integrated FM Solutions at Servest I gained a profound understanding of the sector, furthered by my tenure on the SAFMA board. These experiences highlighted a critical deficiency: the lack of sophisticated technological integration within traditional operational frameworks.

Consequently, I established Advannotech in 2018 with a specific mission to bridge this divide. My goal was to synthesize facilities management with IoT and smart infrastructure, providing data-centric solutions that empower organizations to maximise the efficiency and value of their physical assets.

2. Advannotech has grown into a respected technology business delivering IoT, smart infrastructure, utilities, security and other enterprise solutions. What was the original vision behind starting the company, and what problem were you determined to solve?

A: Our foundational objective was to establish Advannotech as the prominent partner for holistic technology and enterprise management solutions, catering specifically to property owners within the private sector and various government bodies. At the time, the industry was hampered by a significant absence of technology cohesion in facilities management; disparate, siloed systems were compromising operational efficiency, obscuring critical risks, and driving up overhead.

We were determined to transform this complexity into actionable clarity by synthesizing sensors, infrastructure, and workflows into intelligent, interconnected ecosystems. This approach ensures that our clients benefit from tangible returns on investment, immediate data insights, and a transition toward truly proactive operational management.

3. Building a technology company in South Africa comes with its own unique opportunities and challenges. Looking back, what have been some of the defining moments that shaped Advannotech into the business it is today?

A: Launching in 2018 without external capital or an established reputation, our trajectory was defined by several pivotal milestones. Securing early institutional backing from the banking sector was instrumental in catalysing our national expansion. Despite the global pandemic, we achieved exponential growth, attaining multi-million rand revenues and broadening our provincial presence.

Furthermore, by refining our IoT value proposition and cultivating a workforce primarily composed of previously unemployed ICT graduates, we converted initial obstacles into significant operational momentum, cementing our status as a formidable nationwide enterprise.

4. Your business has evolved from delivering enterprise technology solutions to also introducing consumer-focused innovation through sister company AdvannoSmart and SmartKWAM. How different is it building solutions for homeowners compared to large corporate and government clients?

A: Enterprise and government work demands complex, scalable integration across large portfolios like utilities, security, assets, and compliance with rigorous support and ROI focus. Consumer solutions through AdvannoSmart and SmartKWAM (South Africa’s first Black-owned smart-home brand) prioritise simplicity, a unified app experience, curated bundles for real homes/apartments, and ease of use so everyday people get seamless control and energy savings without tech overwhelm.

The underlying technology DNA is shared, but the packaging, accessibility, and go-to-market approach differ significantly.

5. Telkom Business recently launched its IoT Solutions portfolio in partnership with Advannotech. What does collaborating with one of South Africa’s largest telecommunications companies mean for Advannotech, your customers, and the future of connected technologies?

A: This strategic alliance with Telkom Business, a cornerstone of South African telecommunications serves as a powerful catalyst for our growth, providing our clients with the immense reliability and security of a tier-one national network, including 5G and NB-IoT capabilities.

By leveraging Telkom’s extensive footprint, we can now offer enterprise-grade IoT and AI-driven solutions through our VantageX platform to a broader spectrum of organisations, ensuring cost-efficiency without compromising on sophisticated end-to-end support.

This collaboration significantly lowers the barrier to entry for digital transformation in sectors ranging from smart agriculture and utilities to security and logistics. Ultimately, it accelerates the adoption of intelligent, connected ecosystems across both public and private spheres, solidifying our mission to provide scalable, data-centric innovation on a national level.

6. One of Advannotech’s strengths is its ability to integrate multiple technologies into a single end-to-end solution. Why is integration becoming so important for organisations undergoing digital transformation?

A: Disparate, siloed systems compromise operational efficiency by obscuring critical risks and driving up overhead. A genuine digital transformation necessitates that every sensor, device, and workflow operates in concert through a singular, authoritative data source. By synthesising these components, organisations can significantly reduce operational expenditure, gain immediate insights into assets and utilities, and transition toward proactive maintenance and robust ESG compliance reporting.

Our comprehensive methodology spanning business-case synthesis and infrastructure deployment to AI-driven analytics, transforms fragmented environments into intelligent, interconnected ecosystems that deliver tangible returns on investment.

7. South Africa’s technology landscape is ever-evolving, with growing investment in AI, IoT, cloud computing and smart infrastructure. Where do you believe the greatest opportunities lie over the next five to ten years?

A: The most significant prospects reside at the intersection of IoT, AI-driven machine learning, and their pragmatic deployment within property management, agriculture, utilities, and smart infrastructure, alongside mining and logistics.

We anticipate that scalable platforms capable of integrating accessible, actionable insights particularly for mid-tier organisations and municipal bodies will be the primary drivers of operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, and improved service delivery.

Furthermore, extending reliable connectivity into rural territories and developing African-centric solutions tailored to local challenges will remain instrumental as the continent architects its intelligent, interconnected future.

8. As a black founder and technology entrepreneur, you’ve helped build a proudly South African innovation business. How do you see the future for black-owned technology companies, and what more needs to happen to unlock their full potential?

A: Advannotech demonstrates how a 100% black-owned enterprise can achieve rapid scaling, establish a strong nationwide footprint, and actively drive job creation, particularly for unemployed ICT graduates, by combining strategic alliances, access to capital, and disciplined execution.

The future outlook for black owned tech firms is highly encouraging, with  more corporates expanding their supplier-development frameworks, financial institutions evolving their financial ecosystems to offer deeper and prolonged support, and the reinforcement of the talent pipeline through direct mentorship from experienced founders…Tomorrow certainly looks better!

Promoting inclusive growth within this sector is essential to building the digital architectural future across South Africa and the wider continent.

9. Leadership is often about people as much as technology. As Advannotech continues to grow, what kind of culture are you intentionally building, and what qualities do you look for in the people who join your team?

A: Our organisational ethos is intentionally rooted in a purpose-driven, innovation-centric framework that prioritises the delivery of tangible client value and the advancement of inclusive growth.

We place a premium on cultivating a workforce characterised by a profound appetite for continuous learning, technical proficiency, and a collaborative spirit dedicated to resolving the unique operational challenges faced by South African organisations.

Furthermore, by intentionally recruiting and mentoring previously unemployed ICT graduates, we have institutionalised a culture of professional excellence and practical problem-solving that remains fundamental to our mission.

The multidisciplinary team combines systems design, integration, and service expertise with a shared mission of building Africa’s connected future.

10. Looking ahead, what excites you most about Advannotech’s future? What legacy do you hope the company will leave for South Africa’s technology sector, and what message would you share with organisations looking for a trusted innovation partner?

A: What excites me most is scaling connected solutions that deliver measurable impact across enterprises, municipalities, farms, and homes, while expanding further into Africa.

The legacy I hope for is a proudly South African tech company that proved African innovation can solve African challenges, created sustainable opportunities for young talent, and helped normalise integrated, intelligent operations.

For organisations seeking a partner: look for end-to-end capability, proven local delivery, and a team that stays with you beyond installation to keep your environment smarter and future-ready.

As this conversation demonstrates, Advannotech’s story is about far more than connected devices, software platforms, or digital transformation. It is about building an organisation that uses technology as a catalyst for meaningful change.

From pioneering integrated enterprise solutions to expanding into consumer smart homes and forging strategic partnerships with industry leaders, Advannotech continues to demonstrate that innovation is most powerful when it solves real problems and delivers measurable outcomes.

Perhaps the most compelling takeaway from Xolani’s journey is his belief that South Africa has both the talent and the opportunity to shape its own digital future. As emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, IoT, automation, and smart infrastructure continue to transform industries, there has never been a greater need for locally developed solutions that understand African challenges and create African opportunities.

For Xolani, success is measured not only by business growth, but by the legacy Advannotech leaves behind: creating opportunities for young technology professionals, empowering organisations through intelligent innovation, and proving that world-class technology can be conceived, built, and scaled from South Africa.

The future of technology will belong to businesses that connect systems, unlock data, and enable smarter decisions. More importantly, it will belong to leaders with the vision to see beyond today’s challenges and build solutions for tomorrow.

That is the journey Advannotech is on, and the best is still to come!
